Laser and IPL: differences and choosing a treatment

Laser and IPL are both used for hair reduction, but they are different light-based methods. A technology’s name is not enough to make a decision: the specific device, its intended uses and your individual suitability must all match.
Light source and application
A laser operates at a specific wavelength. The Candela GentleMax Pro offers 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG. IPL stands for intense pulsed light and uses a broader, filtered light spectrum. Saying that the remaining IPL light is simply ‘wasted’ does not accurately describe the technology.
Wavelength differences alone do not establish a specific penetration depth or a fixed number of sessions. Energy, pulse duration, skin contact or application technique, and cooling also depend on the device.
Home devices and professional treatment
Home devices differ in approved uses, handling and recommended treatment intervals. Follow the instructions for the specific product, especially regarding skin and hair colours, body areas and contraindications. The capabilities of a professional laser do not justify applying the same assumptions to a home device.
If you are unsure whether a device suits your skin or whether a skin change is harmless, seek dermatological advice before use. Professional treatment can also damage skin if suitability or technique is incorrect.
The key questions
Compare specific information rather than general claims of superiority.
- Which technology and model are being used?
- What results and limitations are realistic for my skin and hair colour?
- How are skin reactions, medication and sun exposure considered beforehand?
- What are the costs and time commitment for the full course, including possible maintenance?
Switching from IPL to laser treatment
Tell us which device you last used, when you used it and how your skin reacted. We will plan the next appointment based on your skin condition and progress. Using several methods at the same time without a coordinated plan is not a shortcut to results.
Frequently asked questions
Are IPL and laser the same?
No. Lasers use specific wavelengths; IPL uses a broader filtered light spectrum. Suitability depends on the specific device and your skin and hair.
Is professional hair removal always permanent?
Long-term reduction is possible; complete hair removal forever is not guaranteed. Regrowth and maintenance appointments may occur.
Can I switch from home IPL to laser?
A switch may be suitable. Tell us the device, date of last use and any skin reactions during your consultation so we can plan appropriately.
