Laser hair removal may also be suitable for people with dark skin. Device selection, appropriate settings and experience with the individual skin type are especially important. A statement such as ‘safe for all skin types’ does not replace individual assessment.

The role of skin pigment and wavelength

Pigment is present in the skin as well as the hair. Light energy and skin cooling therefore need careful adjustment. Otherwise, burns and changes in skin colour can occur, among other problems.

For the GentleMax Pro, Candela assigns the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser to skin types IV–VI and the 755 nm alexandrite laser to skin types I–III. This describes the device’s capabilities; it does not guarantee risk-free treatment or a particular result.

Questions for your consultation

The AAD emphasises experience with your skin tone as an important selection criterion. Answers should relate to your specific skin and planned treatment area.

  • What experience do you have with my skin type and this treatment area?
  • Which device and wavelength may be suitable, and why?
  • How are skin condition, medication and previous reactions considered?
  • What are the possible risks, alternatives and realistic results?
  • What will we do if unusual skin reactions occur or progress stops?

Not approval for a fresh tan

Naturally dark skin and a fresh tan are not equivalent. Sunbathing, sunbeds and self-tanner must be discussed before your appointment. If you have a tan, we wait until it has completely faded; a longer wavelength does not remove this precaution.

Realistic expectations

Hair reduction may be possible, but its extent and the number of sessions vary individually. Skin type alone does not mean your result will be identical to another person’s. Skin conditions, persistent discolouration or unclear findings require dermatological advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can dark skin be treated with laser?

It may be suitable. The right device, appropriate settings, skin assessment and experience with that skin type are essential.

Which wavelength does the GentleMax Pro offer for dark skin?

Candela assigns 1064 nm Nd:YAG to skin types IV–VI. Individual suitability still needs to be assessed.

Does a test patch guarantee safety?

No. It can provide information about the response but does not rule out later side effects.
