Planning laser hair removal in summer

Laser treatment is not inherently limited to one season. Whether a summer appointment makes sense depends on your skin condition, any tan and your ability to protect the treated area from the sun. The calendar alone does not determine suitability.
Dark skin is not the same as a fresh tan
The Candela GentleMax Pro offers two wavelengths for different skin types. This does not mean tanned skin is generally suitable for treatment. Even an Nd:YAG laser does not automatically make an appointment after sunbathing safe.
The AAD recommends waiting until an existing tan has completely faded before laser hair removal. The time needed varies; a fixed two-week rule is unsuitable. Sunburn or irritated skin also needs to be assessed before another appointment.
Plan holidays and appointments together
Mention planned travel, beach days and extended sun exposure during your consultation. If protecting an area after treatment will be difficult, starting later or taking a break may be more appropriate.
- Avoid deliberate tanning, sunbeds and self-tanner before your appointment.
- Avoid direct sun after the session and protect the area with clothing and suitable sunscreen.
- Report any skin changes after your holiday; do not judge suitability only by the number of days that have passed.
- Postpone an appointment if your skin is tanned or irritated, rather than assuming extra cooling or different settings make it safe.
What a break means for your plan
A break can extend the overall course of treatment. It does not establish that all previous results are lost or guarantee completion by the next swimming season. After a break, hair growth and skin are reassessed.
A good time to start is when you can reliably attend appointments and follow aftercare. A consultation can take place even if treatment will only be suitable after your holiday.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have laser treatment in summer?
It may be possible if your skin is suitable and not tanned, and you can reliably protect it from the sun. The decision is individual.
Can Nd:YAG be used on a fresh tan?
A different wavelength is not blanket approval. An existing tan must fade completely and your skin must be reassessed before the appointment.
Are two weeks after a beach holiday enough?
Not necessarily. What matters is whether the tan has completely faded and your skin is suitable for treatment again.
