7 myths about laser hair removal

Specific questions are more helpful than absolute promises when deciding on laser treatment. These seven points show which expectations to discuss before your first appointment.

1. ‘One session is enough’

A course of treatment is usually needed. Hairs do not all grow at the same time, and responses differ by area and person. Early visible reduction does not yet show how many further appointments will be appropriate.

2. ‘No hair will ever grow back’

Long-term hair reduction is possible. However, hair may regrow and maintenance appointments may be needed. In particular, hormonally influenced facial hair growth in women cannot be promised to be permanently resolved.

3. ‘Blonde and grey hair respond just as well’

Pigment-based lasers need enough pigment in the hair. Very light blonde, red, grey and white hair responds poorly or not at all. Extra sessions do not simply compensate for missing pigment; another method may be more appropriate.

4. ‘Cooling makes treatment risk-free’

Cooling helps protect the skin surface. Nevertheless, discomfort, burns, pigmentation changes or scarring are possible. Proper application and careful selection remain necessary.

5. ‘Nd:YAG can always treat freshly tanned skin’

A different wavelength is not blanket approval. The tan must fade completely and the skin must be reassessed before another session. Planned sunny holidays therefore belong in appointment planning.

6. ‘Laser hair removal is always pain-free’

The sensation is individual. Brief warm pinpricks or stinging may occur. You do not have to endure severe pain; mention discomfort immediately and ask for a break if needed.

7. ‘Device and price alone determine quality’

The right device must be accompanied by appropriate settings, experience with your skin type, a careful consultation and clear aftercare. A low price does not prove poor quality, and a high price does not guarantee safety. Compare specific services, risks and total costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is hair-free skin forever guaranteed?

No. The aim is long-term reduction; regrowth and later maintenance sessions are possible.

Are all hair colours suitable?

No. Very light, red, grey and white hairs respond poorly or not at all to pigment-based lasers.

What makes a useful consultation?

It addresses your skin and hair, history, risks, alternatives, time commitment and costs specifically, and leaves room for questions and a free decision.
